George S. Huntington The Anatomy of the Human Peritoneum and Abdominal Cavity

PREFACE In the following pages an attempt has been made to emphasize the value of Embryology and Comparative Anatomy in elucidating the difficult and often complicated morphological problems encountered in the study of human adult anatomy. Moreover, in addition to the direct advance in the method and scope of anatomical teaching afforded by these aids, it is further hoped that the broader interpretation, both of structure and function, obtained by ontogenetic and phylogenetic comparison, will impart an interest to the study of adult human morphology, such as the subject, considered solely in the narrow field of its own limitations, could never arouse. The book represents part of the course in visceral anatomy as developed during the past fourteen years at Columbia University. The sections dealing with the morphology of the vertebrate ileo-colic junction and with the structural details of the human cæcum and appendix are considered somewhat more fully, as warranted by the extensive material available. The illustrations are for the greater part taken from preparations in the Morphological Museum of the University. Wherever practicable the direct photographic reproduction of the actual preparation is given. In the case of preparations not suitable for this purpose, careful drawings have been made which offer in every instance a faithful and correct interpretation of the conditions presented by the actual object. A number of the embryonic illustrations are taken from the standard ...

James Kelly Young Handbook of Anatomy: Being a Complete Compend Anatomy, Including the Anatomy Viscera and Numerous Tables

Robert E MacLaren Learning and Teaching in Human Anatomy

Modern medical school human anatomy teaching frequently leads to students adopting surface learning approaches, such a memorizing lists of structures through mnemonics. This can be avoided by situating anatomy within the domains of evolution, embryology or clinical medicine, which provide understanding and application in ways that encourage deep learning approaches. Examinations in anatomy can also be structured to reward higher learning outcomes through the Biggs and Collis model of 'SOLO Taxonomy'. This book summarises the author's personal experiences of applying current theories in educational research to develop more advanced anatomy teaching methods and would be relevant for teachers of anatomy across a variety of disciplines.

Marios Loukas History of Anatomy. An International Perspective

A unique biographical review of the global contributors to field of anatomy Knowledge of human anatomy has not always been an essential component of medical education and practice. Most European medical schools did not emphasize anatomy in their curricula until the post-Renaissance era; current knowledge was largely produced between the 16th and 20th centuries. Although not all cultures throughout history have viewed anatomy as fundamental to medicine, most have formed ideas about the internal and external mechanisms of the body—influences on the field of anatomy that are often overlooked by scholars and practitioners of Western medicine. History of Anatomy: An International Perspective explores the global and ancient origins of our modern-day understanding of anatomy, presenting detailed biographies of anatomists from varied cultural and historical settings. Chapters organized by geographic region, including Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, review the lives of those that helped shape our current understanding of the human form. Examining both celebrated and lesser-known figures, this comprehensive work examines their contributions to the discipline and helps readers develop a global perspective on a cornerstone of modern medicine and surgery. Offers a comprehensive and multidisciplinary examination of the history of anatomy Traces the emergence of modern knowledge of anatomy from ancient roots to the modern era Fills a gap in current literature on global perspectives on the history of anatomy Written by an internationally recognized team of practicing physicians and scholars History of Anatomy: An International Perspective is an engaging and insightful historical review written for anatomists, anthropologists, physicians, surgeons, medical personnel, medical students, health related professionals, historians, and anyone interested in the history of anatomy, surgery, and medicine.

O. Surnina V. Ultrasonic Topographical and Pathotopographical Anatomy. A Color Atlas

Written by experienced and well-respected physicians and professors, this new all-color volume presents the ultrasonic topographical and pathotopographical anatomy of the body, including the head, neck, chest, anterolateral abdominal wall, abdominal organs, retroperitoneal space, male and female pelvises, and lower extremities. Specific and non-specific ultrasonic symptoms are suggested for normal and abnormal developmental variants, diffuse and local pathotopographical anatomy. This color atlas contains comparative topographical and pathotopographical data and is the first manual of its kind for students and medical specialists in different areas, including those specializing in medical sonography. The original technology was tested at clinics in patients subjected to ultrasonic monitoring. Because of early detection there were no false-positive or false-negative results. The therapy was effective, and, in some cases, the use of the original method of “seagalography” (optometry and pulsemotorgraphy) has made it possible to develop new methods of treatment and/or to determine the optimal doses of drugs, as well as to develop effective drug complexes for treatment of a given pathology. This important new volume will be valuable to physicians, junior physicians, medical residents, lecturers in medicine, and medical students alike, either as a textbook or as a reference. It is a must-have for any physician’s library.

Abdel-Hameed Usama K. Introductory Plant Anatomy

Plant anatomy or phytotomy is the general term for the study of the internal structure of plants. While originally it included plant morphology, which is the description of the physical form and external structure of plants, since the mid-20th century the investigations of plant anatomy are considered a separate, distinct field. Plant anatomy is now frequently investigated at the cellular level, and often involves the sectioning of tissues and microscopy.

M. Prives, N. Lysenkov, V. Bushkovich Human anatomy (комплект из 2 книг)

This two-volume richly illustrated work on human anatomy is the first English translation of the Soviet textbook by M. Prives, N. Lysenkov, and V. Bushkovich. Unique in its analytic and synthetic approaches to the subject, the book covers descriptive, evolutionary, functional and practical anatomy. The human organism is studied in depth as the product of long and continuing evolution, and both traditional anatomy and new directions in anatomical science are treated fully. The clear and detailed discussions of the influence of sports and various occupations on the human body will be of particular interest. Volume I covers the following subjects: the history of anatomy, the science of bones and their articulations, myology, the science of viscera, and the science of the organs of internal secretion. Volume II deals with the anatomy о the heart and blood-vascular system the lymphatic system, the organs оf haemopoiesis and immunological reactions, the nervous system and the sense organs. The phylogenesis and ontogenesis of the organs are discussed in detail. The effect of social factors on the structure of the organism is described. The importance of the principle of integrity in anatomy is stressed, namely that anatomy is a science of the structure not only of the separate systems but of the whole human organism. The description of the structure of the human body is supplemented by synthesis of the anatomical data as a result о which the human organism is represented as an integ...

Michael Sappol A Traffic of Dead Bodies. Anatomy and Embodied Social Identity in Nineteenth-Century America

A Traffic of Dead Bodies enters the sphere of bodysnatching medical students, dissection-room pranks, and anatomical fantasy. It shows how nineteenth-century American physicians used anatomy to develop a vital professional identity, while claiming authority over the living and the dead. It also introduces the middle-class women and men, working people, unorthodox healers, cultural radicals, entrepreneurs, and health reformers who resisted and exploited anatomy to articulate their own social identities and visions. The nineteenth century saw the rise of the American medical profession: a proliferation of practitioners, journals, organizations, sects, and schools. Anatomy lay at the heart of the medical curriculum, allowing American medicine to invest itself with the authority of European science. Anatomists crossed the boundary between life and death, cut into the body, reduced it to its parts, framed it with moral commentary, and represented it theatrically, visually, and textually. Only initiates of the dissecting room could claim the privileged healing status that came with direct knowledge of the body. But anatomy depended on confiscation of the dead--mainly the plundered bodies of African Americans, immigrants, Native Americans, and the poor. As black markets in cadavers flourished, so did a cultural obsession with anatomy, an obsession that gave rise to clashes over the legal, social, and moral status of the dead. Ministers praised or denounced anatomy from the pulpit; r...

Francesco Faletra Anatomy of the Heart by Multislice Computed Tomography

New MSCT machines produce a volume data set with the highest isotropic spatial resolution ever seen, offering superb 3D images of the entire heart and vessels. The texts currently available on cardiac CT imaging mainly focus on visualizing pathological aspects of coronary arteries. Anatomy of the Heart by Multislice Computed Tomography is the first text to bridge the gap between classical anatomy textbooks and CT textbooks, presenting a side-by-side comparison of ‘electronic’ dissection made by CT scanning and traditionally hand-made anatomical dissection. Focusing on the fundamentals as well as the details of cardiac anatomy in a clinical setting using MSCT, this is an invaluable reference for cardiac imaging trainees, cardiologists, radiologists, interventionists and electrophysiologists, providing a better understanding of the cardiac structures, coronary arteries and veins anatomy and their 3-dimensional spatial relationships.

Nader Bokhari Nerve Blocking and the Brachial Plexus Sheath

This book includes pictures of my own work in the anatomy lab. This includes E12 plastinations and microscopic technique. Over the years there have been a debate of the anatomy of the cervical fascia especially the brachial plexus sheath the anatomy of this sheath is important in clinical anesthesia. In my work I will be demonstrating that this sheath does not cover the root of the nerves coming out from neck vertebrae. There should be different approaches regarding how to insert the needle around different areas in the neck. It seems that the E12 plastination studies are more reliable for knowing the exact organization of the fascia in the neck. Further work might be needed to explore the structures around the brachial plexus in order to understand the exact anatomy of the brachial plexus sheath.

Sabine Hildebrandt The Anatomy of Murder. Ethical Transgressions and Anatomical Science during the Third Reich

Of the many medical specializations to transform themselves during the rise of National Socialism, anatomy has received relatively little attention from historians. While politics and racial laws drove many anatomists from the profession, most who remained joined the Nazi party, and some helped to develop the scientific basis for its racialist dogma. As historian and anatomist Sabine Hildebrandt reveals, however, their complicity with the Nazi state went beyond the merely ideological. They progressed through gradual stages of ethical transgression, turning increasingly to victims of the regime for body procurement, as the traditional model of working with bodies of the deceased gave way, in some cases, to a new paradigm of experimentation with the “future dead.”
